  • Character: Snow White
  • Fandom: Snow White and the Seven Dwarves (Disney)
  • Reason for Being Hated: Gets called the worst and most sexist of the princesses because she is passive and does nothing and just exists to get carried away by a prince. Cinderella and Aurora get this too, but they had feelings for their princes beforehand, whereas Snow White goes off with a random guy who takes her away on his horse.

I actually liked Snow White … I recently re-watched this movie, and I still like her. I thought her voice was beautiful and I related to her, not because I’m a passive person (I’m not generally), but because she acted realistically considering her age and upbringing and the time period (both in her story and of the making of the movie). It actually quite annoys me how often she’s insulted. Even if you don’t like her or her beautiful little movie, hating on her seems pointless, as she doesn’t do anything worthy of hate other than exist and be young and feminine. She’s passive because that’s all she knows how to be, but look at the things she did do: she’s forced to suddenly flee everything she knows and initially freaks out but then adjusts and enlists animals to aid her, she cleans a cottage and everything in it hoping to get its absent residents (which she believes to be orphaned kids) to let her stay there, she takes charge of and works in their house for room and board, she doesn’t ask for any special treatment or try to do something she doesn’t know how to, and she doesn’t discriminate against Grumpy (who obviously doesn’t like her and is eventually charmed by her kindness) or the old hag (who she initially fears but still tries to help when the animals go after her and the hag fakes being in pain). Plus, she’s sweet and unafraid of work and humble. (People call her Too Dumb To Live for telling the hag she’s home alone. She lives in the Middle Ages, she’s 14, and she’s honest. More like Too Good To Foil The Evil Queen Alone.)

And she does meet the Prince before going off with him, in the first five minutes of the movie when she’s still the castle’s cleaning lady. Although they don’t meet again until she wakes up, she’s clearly shown to think of him romantically (remember that song she sings around the middle of the movie and the line, “There’s nobody like him … anywhere at all.”?). For his part, he’s said to “search far and wide” for her, and as he’s coming up to the coffin, he’s even singing the same song he sang to her in the beginning of the movie. He kisses her, and everyone acts like it’s necrophilia, which it’s not (in this movie), as that’s a way to say goodbye to the dead at funerals. Note how everyone present then bows their heads in prayer and mourning.

So. Good movie for its time. Snow doesn’t deserve the hate she gets, and neither does her romance. I recommend the movie, because it has lovely music, a good pace, some nice songs, and simple, pure and timeless themes.

I’d apologize for ranting, but I’m not sorry that I love Snow and her movie.
